Sober Curious?
Sober is not just for alcoholics anymore.
Here is the truth, alcohol is not healthy. There is no actual reason to drink other than wanting to. The body doesn't need it. Red wine is not an exception. The antioxidants in red wine are not worth the risks. Antioxidants come from many other sources.
Have you heard of the sober curious movement? A lot of young people are questioning social norms around drinking.
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Why do I drink alcohol?
How much and how often do I drink?
What emotions come along with it?
Do I feel pressured to drink?
How does my body feel after drinking alcohol?
These questions are all interesting and will allow you to dive deeper into your relationship with alcohol. Ultimately you choose what you put into your body.
What is sober curious?
The sober curious movement involves people who do not typically dentify as alcoholics choosing to abstain from alcohol consumption for various lengths of time. I think of it as an experiment for your body and mind.
Sober curious people go out and don't drink, they turn down alcohol when offered, or they avoid places where people will be drinking. This could be for a night, a month, or forever depending on the person.
Alcohol and women: (more than 3-4 drinks in one day or more than 8-10 servings of alcohol in a week for women is considered heavy drinking.) It is proven that alcohol harms women more than it does men even if the women consume less alcohol over all. The female body does not tolerate alcohol consumption well.
Some risks associated with alcohol consumption:
Long lasting brain damage.
Breast cancer.
Heart disease.
Fatty liver.
Leaky gut.
Lasting mood changes.
Cellular damage.
Blood sugar imbalances.
Hormone imbalances.
Other cancers.
Trouble sleeping.
Depression.
Increases anxiety.
Decreases the body's ability to absorb vitamins.
Weight gain.
What to do instead of drinking?
Literally anything…
What should I drink instead?
Moctails, healthy juice shots, herbal tea, or fruit infused water
How long should I abstain?
Well that depends on you. I think a month is a fantastic place to start. If you don't think you can hold out for a whole month then you might need to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol. You can always start small. Try it on a night out and see how you feel.
Are you ready to say goodbye to alcohol?
