Make Your New Year Resolutions Stick!
Ten Tips to Reach Your Goals.
Write down your goals and create a plan. Brain dump everything. Organize it into larger goals (10yr, 5yr, 1yr). Next break it down into daily habits. What needs to get done on a daily or weekly basis for you to end up where you want to be in 10 years?
Go with the flow. Try not to over plan. Accomplishing things takes action and stuff that you do not plan for always comes up. Be able to go with the flow. Get knocked down and get back up over and over again. Nothing is ever perfect, you have to learn to be imperfect and show up anyway. I have personally taken time off from the gym many times over the years due to many different reasons. If you quit for a month, get back to it as soon as you can. You can not let every bump in the road become a mountain.
Use a calendar and a planner. This can be digital or pen and paper. I personally love pen to paper. Nothing is more satisfying to me. This helps keep you on track and allows you to move things around as needed. Try to always stick with your deadlines and never break promises to yourself. You are your boss. Show up and respect yourself like you respect your boss.
Use a Habit tracker for the little thing. Use a daily habit tracker because your goals are accomplished in your daily habits. It allows you to see the data so you know if you are doing better or worse than you think.
Try a vision board. I love visuals. Enthusiasm will fade over time. It is important to have something that excites you again and again. The process of building wealth or losing weight is not really glamorous or sexy. It can be very boring and hard. When I am lacking motivation I look at my vision board and it reminds me why I am putting in the hard work. You can also do visualizations where you take time every day to visualize your life after you accomplish the goal. Visualize how it feels to succeed. Not only will this help with the law of attraction it also just keeps you pumped when things get hard.
Adding “focus” to your daily journal prompts. This helps you go with the flow because you are always thinking about your bigger goals. I take a quick minute to journal about my goals daily. This gives me room to rid my head of clutter. I have a section in my journal labeled focus where I list the main things that I need to focus on to achieve my goals. This should remind you of what needs done and put you in the mindset to do what it takes.
Take big steps and small steps. You have to know when to go slow and steady and you have to know when to go all in and take a risk or make a big move. Stop side stepping. Often we side step instead of going straight for the big move. We know that we should make the big move but fear holds us back (Fear and Insecurity). I have been in this situation many times and every time I listen to my gut and make the big move things work out better than I could have imagined. When it comes to investments, career decisions, and location sometimes you just have to jump. If you know, you know.
Don’t be afraid to change your identity. Accomplishing your goals becomes so much easier when you actually believe in yourself. This can take some practice especially if you are someone who has let yourself down in the past. You can use mantras, journaling, affirmations, therapy, or coaches to help you change how you see yourself. If you struggle with low self esteem and you never follow through on your resolutions then try this step first. Do not be afraid to build yourself up one brick at a time. Start to think of yourself as someone who is worthy and capable of accomplishing your dreams. Each step in the right direction builds momentum. This can be done by taking action and following through. You can use your habit tracker to check off your accomplishments. The more promises you keep to yourself the easier it will become. The vision board and the visualization tool can also help in this area.
Cut out distractions. Limit screen time, distracting habits, toxic people, TV, comparing yourself to others, news, and worrying about things you can't control. Instead of consuming, try to create something of your own. The time you save from distractions is the time you will use to build your dream life.
Always be reassessing your how. My end goals tend to stay the same. I know what I want but the how has changed many times. If something stops working or a situation changes then adapt the how, not the end goal. There has been times when I do not know exactly how I am going to accomplish something, but I have a rough idea and I am willing to learn as I go. It is impossible to know everything so just start where you are and do the best you can. Just never give up and you will get there.
